i think the left would benefit from a stronger analysis of the real estate industry, it’s component parts, those who benefit from the existing property rights’ regime

That’s kind of my point. Sometimes I think homeowners are a bigger structural barrier to “social housing” (whatever the f that means) than REBNY.

Homeownership isn’t all about asset. It’s about being able to do what you want. I can’t have an AC in my window or a ceiling fan. Can’t have pets. Rent raised at random. If I owned I could have all those things and not worry about being evicted.

If I can live in it the rest of my life, why do I care that it’s value increases or decreases? After 30 years I only need to worry about repairs and taxes. Most people like that freedom. it’s about owning where you live instead of paying someone else’s mortgage.

Correct it’s abt self determination and stability as well, which is why shared governance models are as important (or more important maybe!) for us to figure out on the path to “social housing”
